Who We Are:
After experiencing the divorce of his adoptive parents as a young child, Billy Ballenger's growing up years were filled with instability and pain. Moving frequently with his family, Billy was forced to seek new friends again and again. He felt as if he never quite "fit" anywhere. As other children taunted "the new kid", feelings of low self worth grew. Sadly, he accepted the criticism, causing him to retreat into a lonely world of self-hatred. As he grew older, Billy's depression turned to anger manifested through aggression and lashing out at authority. His behavior caused trouble at home, at school, and ultimately, with the law. In the mid 80's, Billy was sent by the court to White's Residential and Family Services in Wabash, Indiana. At first, he thought this would be one more place where he would feel like a misfit. However, he soon realized that White's was different. Because of the new-found acceptance and love he experienced there, Billy was finally free to be himself. As his self confidence grew, so did his areas of interest. He joined choir and the basketball team, where he established a new positive identity. With the encouragement of his house parents, White's pastor and the guidance of Basketball Coach Larry Vaughn, Billy found his place in music and sports. He finally found his "home", a place of real belonging.
Another area of interest for Billy resulted from his new found positive attitude; and that was in Jodie, a lovely young White's student who shared his interest in music. Little did they suspect, when they first met in choir, the life road they would travel together. They "dated" at White's and, upon their release, married and started a family. Poor choices can easily follow premature teenage independence. Billy and Jodie were no exception. They found their choices, and then their lives, spiraling downward. In September, 1988, two years after leaving White's, the police entered their home and took Billy and Jodie away. Their little girl was placed in foster care while they served two years in state prison from 1989 to 1991.
During the countless hours of solitude and quiet now forced upon them, Jodie and Billy, with the help of caring Christians, found their way back to the love and grace of Jesus. Struggling with brokenness over his mistakes and the loss of their daughter, Billy turned to prayer, at first motivated by a desire for God to "fix" everything. Through reading his bible, however his heart turned to that of surrendering his life to God. Simultaneously, Jodie made similar choices. They both fell in love with the Jesus that they had heard about as teens. When released from prison, they reunited their family and took an entirely different direction. Their love for the Lord strengthened their love for each other and for others. They wanted to keep young people from the mistakes that nearly cost them their family and so started a music and youth organization called Break the Grey. They travel with Break the Grey Interns using speaking and the performing arts to offer life changes messages to young people in elementary, junior and senior high schools across north America. Throughout the years, doors have continued to open for Billy and Jodie to share their story with others. Their passions are rooted deep in the hearts of young people and the hope this generation will bring to the world. With appearances in China, Russia, television, radio interviews, concerts, prison seminars and schools, this couple's passion to make a difference is evident.
OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH
THE HOLY SCRIPTURES
We believe the Bible is God-inspired (2 Timothy 3:16,17).
THE ETERNAL GODHEAD
We believe God is Triune: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14).
THE FALL OF MAN
We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that by voluntary disobedience he fell from perfection (Romans 5:12).
THE PLAN OF SALVATION
We believe that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us, signing the pardon of all who believe on Him (John 3:16; Romans 5:8).
SALVATION THROUGH GRACE
We believe that we have no righteousness and must come to God pleading the righteousness of Christ (Ephesians 2:8).
REPENTANCE AND ACCEPTANCE
We believe that upon sincere repentance, and a whole-hearted acceptance of Christ, we are justified before God (I John 1:9).
THE NEW BIRTH
We believe that the change, which takes place in the heart and life at conversion, is a very real one (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 2:20).
DAILY CHRISTIAN LIVING
We believe that it is the will of God that we be sanctified daily, growing constantly in the faith (Hebrews 6:1).
THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE
We believe that it is the will of God that we walk in the Spirit daily (Ephesians 4:30-32).
We believe that the experience and daily walk of the believer should never lead him into extremes of fanaticism (Philippians 4:5).
*Belief: We believe Jesus Christ is Lord and the only hope for the world.
*Excellence: We believe in doing everything as unto the Lord Jesus Christ.
*Becoming Servants: We believe that to be an effective leader we must first learn to serve others.

When We Started:
"Break the Grey" started as a vision given to Billy on a road trip to Branson, Missouri in 2005. He could see very clearly that God was instructing him to take his story into the public schools and therefore make an impact that would help to mold the lives of thousands of teens. By the fall of 2005, we had begun to do our very first school assemblies in Southern Indiana.
Where We Have Been:
Here we are years later and to date we have been honored to speak and bring Godly influence to the lives of hundreds of thousands students in the public school systems of North America. Break the Grey is having a coast to coast impact. Since that time God has brought us people with the same passion and vision for our public schools as we have and we have continued to increase in school assemblies, concerts, events, and speaking engagements.
Where We Are Going:
Our outreaches already stretch into many cities across North America and will eventually result in a worldwide school outreach. This also promises to be life changing for the Interns God calls to Break the Grey. Our long term vision is to see 25 performing arts teams developed within Break the Grey as well as a BTG campus for training of those teams, and to disciple and train Interns.
Our Outreach Is:
Here at Break the Grey we offer an experience of a lifetime. Through our internship you will experience growth in new ways, meet some extraordinary people, and get to travel across America and Canada. At Break the Grey we believe in the importance of teaching today's teens the benefits of integrity, respect, honor, discipline, vision, and hard work. Character development is at the heart of this organization and that is why we approach school assemblies from a secular format. We do not believe it is right to force one's belief on anyone therefore we feel we should live by example and be creative in showing Jesus to hurting people. BTGI is like a mission trip to the public schools, with the hands on benefits of Internship training, but the atmosphere of a Christian College. The interns are strengthened as they realize their untapped potential and strenths in the ministry. Our interns have the opportunity to pour back into the community through volunteering at local ministries and our home church. But let's not forget fun! When our interns are not working they have the luxury of exploring our community and meeting a ton of great people.
Above all, BTG is a Christ centered organization. We, as a whole, believe in the divine death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that resulted in the atonement of sin for the entire world. We believe the only real way we impact youth throughout the world is through the power and anointing of Jesus. BTG promotes and strives for an entirely Christ-like attitude in EVERYTHING we do. BTG believes in using our faith as a powerful tool to achieve anything we set our minds to or ask for as it is promised within the Bible. At BTG you will be transofrmed through Bible studies and other spiritual activities that promote Christ-like excellence in all you do. When applying for Break the Grey, know that what you get to do on a stage is a small part of how ministry works. There is a lot of behind the scenes things that have to be done for the show to go on. Everything we do, we do in excellence, because our God is excellent. We have the highest expectations of our Interns and we treat all things, either big or small, as if it were a soul being won for the kingdom. There is nothing normal about Break The Grey! Our Interns are extraordinary young adults! The training you will receive will be something that very few ever get to experience or use in life.
